Gustavo is a chemist consultant and a marine superintendent with 10 years’ experience in the field of qualitative and quantitative claims related to the carriage by sea of liquid and solid bulk cargoes.

His day-to-day activity involves advising clients on quality disputes on petroleum products, chemical and petrochemical cargoes, as well as Fuel Oil and Bunkers quality disputes.

Gustavo served as petroleum laboratory analyst at LCC lab in Europe for several years, where he worked in the Petroleum Products Testing department. During this time he gained extensive experience on a wide variety of testing methods, including ISO 8217 fuel oil and gasoil standards.

He then moved to become a consultant chemist, performing high profile quality and quantity investigations on petroleum and chemical cargoes in over 20 countries, both on board ships and at terminal installations. Over the years, Gustavo has advised a variety of international shipping stakeholders including P&I clubs, underwriters, ship owners, charterers, traders and oil majors.

Gustavo regularly serves as expert chemist witness in the UK High Court of Justice as well as in arbitrations. He also regularly represents his clients in joint testing at third parties’ laboratories in the USA, Europe, UAE and Latin America.

Throughout his career he has been directly involved in more than 1,000 quality claims related to bunkers, liquid and solid bulk cargoes.

Gustavo regularly holds loss prevention courses for deck and engine officers and is a regular panellist at international conferences on his areas of expertise, including bunkers quality claims, liquid and solid bulk cargoes contaminations.

In April 2019 Gustavo started his own consultancy firm Cosulich Marine Consultants (“CMC”) in the United Arab Emirates, which was then successfully acquired in January 2021 by Charles Taylor Marine Technical Services where he now serves as Director of Middle East.
