Following on from our inaugural Elements Newsletter in June, we very much hope you’ll enjoy our second edition which continues to explore various developments in all things Natural Resources.

In this edition, our team of adjusters from Europe, Middle East, the Americas and Asia Pacific discuss what has been happening in their regions as well as some global trends.

The common theme continues to be the Energy Transition with commentary on how this is impacting our industry. Content ranges from the clean-up of the traditional hydrocarbon industry i.e. decommissioning, through to new sources of energy in the renewable space, and also the digital enhancements that producers now deploy across both energy and mining risks to achieve even greater efficiencies as they work towards decarbonising their activities.

We would also like to take the opportunity to welcome a few new joiners in our Natural Resources team including Emily Spellman and Priyanka Ruprai in London.

Now that countries are starting to slowly unlock from the pandemic, we very much look forward to reconnecting with our clients and recommencing our site inspections and claims meetings in a more traditional face-to-face manner.

We hope you will find Elements interesting, informative and insightful.

If you have any feedback or suggestions for future content, please do share your thoughts with myself or any of our other contributors.

Wind Turbines & Lightning Strikes

Lightning is an ever-present natural phenomenon. Indeed the destructive power of a lightning strike, and the resulting wildfires it can cause, is actually key to the lifecycle of some species of flora. However, the increased use of composite materials in aviation in the last half century has led to a renewed interest in this topic as increasing numbers of structural aircraft components are composite in nature which can potentially be more susceptible to damage from lightning strikes.

Pros and Cons of Digital Twins for Insurers

Those of us that attended the online Lillehammer Energy Claims Conference in March this year could not have failed to be impressed by the excellent presentation by Ewan Saunders at Serica Energy. Ewan demonstrated The Bruce Platform’s Production, Utility and Quarters (PUQ) digital twin giving us some insight into how it has been developed and what it can be used for.

Let's talk about CABLES!

With the environment and global energy transition ever higher on the agenda, insurers’ focus is switching increasingly to green technologies and the new opportunities these bring. The global expansion of offshore wind is probably the biggest and most accessible.
