Why local knowledge matters when managing regional claims throughout Australia and Asia
Working across Australia and Asia means operating in some very different markets. Geography, infrastructure, regulation and local business practices vary considerably across the region, and those differences can have a direct bearing on how a claim is managed.
For Charles Taylor, this means combining our local market knowledge with our technical expertise to effectively support each claim under the umbrella of our regional hub. Our teams work locally, drawing on different disciplines depending on the circumstances of the loss.
That breadth of expertise is important because claims do not always fit neatly into one area.
A single event might cut across several business lines at once, requiring input from our loss adjusters, engineers, accountants, surveyors or other technical specialists, while location, infrastructure and access to equipment can add further complications on the ground.
Going above and beyond
Sometimes the solution requires a unique approach to the problem. In one case involving a major power producer in Asia, the failure of a major power turbine created the challenge of getting a replacement to site without a lengthy period of disruption.
Rather than relying on conventional shipping, Charles Taylor found an alternative solution that allowed the turbine to be flown to site instead. This involved using the world’s largest Antonov aircraft and modifying the runway at the local airport so that the aircraft could land. The solution reduced downtime by three months, not to mention significant costs.
By going above and beyond providing our initial loss estimate to support reinsurers, Charles Taylor was able to engage and lead on the solution with local partners, manage the expectations of all parties, help to protect key relationships with adjusters and insurers
Crucially, it demonstrates how Charles Taylor understands the value of both the technical aspects of a claim and the circumstances on the ground.
Understanding the local framework
In another unique case, a fire at a fragrance factory sent firewater carrying contamination into the surrounding waterway, triggering a separate environmental liability claim distinct from the property damage itself. Responding effectively meant understanding not only the fire, but the local regulatory obligations that followed it – from council notification requirements to cleanup and remediation standards.
This was a reminder of how technical expertise alone rarely tells the whole story, and that knowing the regulatory landscape a loss occurs in can be just as critical to how it is managed.
For a region as varied and complex as Australia and Asia, different industries and locations bring different risks and practical considerations.
For Charles Taylor, understanding those differences means being able to identify the expertise a claim requires and respond to the particular circumstances in which it has occurred. It is this combination of local knowledge, technical expertise and practical problem-solving that shapes its approach to claims across Australia and APAC.
