Charles Taylor Investment Management (CTIM)

Charles Taylor Investment Management manages in excess of US$2 billion, principally on behalf of insurance businesses, including the mutual insurers managed by the Charles Taylor Group.

We have extensive expertise in top-down asset allocation, fixed income, equity and alternatives investing, in a multi-currency environment.

We offer extensive experience in liability managed investment strategies, managing or advising pension funds, and insurance company portfolios, utilising a team of highly experienced investment professionals.

Investment approach and process

We are research driven and employ a judgemental and adaptive approach, recognising that relationships and correlations within financial markets fluctuate through time, hence portfolios need to constantly adapt to such changes.

Our bias to income and value will utilise higher dividend equities, non-sovereign fixed income, emerging markets and exposure to alternative assets such as private debt, infrastructure and real estate.

In order to achieve investment goals, we begin by setting appropriate long-term strategic objectives. We create a benchmark appropriate to the client’s liabilities, return objectives and risk appetite. We then take tactical investment positions reflecting top-down market views and bottom-up market opportunities. Finally, we ensure the portfolio is balanced – a collection of good ideas and opportunities, which, when aggregated, form a coherent set of investments.

Asset liability matching

We manage an asset-liability matched mandate on behalf of our US client, Signal Mutual Indemnity Association Ltd, the largest provider of longshore workers' compensation insurance to the US maritime industry.

Using a combination of conventional and inflation-linked investments to cover liabilities stretching beyond 40 years in duration, the scheme operates within specified tolerances as defined in Signal’s investment guidelines.

In addition to focusing on returns, we pay careful attention to ensuring that any taxable profits are taken at times that are in harmony with the overall management of the mutual insurance company.
